Given that it’s a volcano located in Sicily, in the common imagination, Mount Etna is seen as a hot mountain on a hot island, in a hot sea. However, when winter arrives, even on Mount Etna – at an altitude of over 3000 meters – temperatures drop significantly, and snow covers the landscape with its magnificent white blanket.
During this time, the volcano becomes a tourist attraction that rivals the Alps and the Apennines, perfect for practicing winter sports. “Idda” – as it’s affectionately called by the locals – offers the opportunity to ski and snowboard while overlooking the sea on the horizon, providing tourists and locals alike with a dreamlike high-altitude scenery.
On Mount Etna, you’ll find two ski resorts, located on the North and South slopes respectively. The facilities on the northern side are found at Piano Provenzana – Linguaglossa – which retains snow for longer periods and sometimes remains open until March or April. Here, you’ll also find a ski school and 10 km of slopes suitable for beginners, children, as well as professionals, including courses and competitive races for expert skiers.
The northern facility is located in Nicolosi and at Rifugio Sapienza, reaching up to 2700 meters in altitude. It can also be accessed via the Etna Cable Car, where you can enjoy the Etna panorama comfortably. Here, you’ll find four slopes, with the longest measuring 4 km. Two red slopes are available for experts, devoid of vegetation, offering panoramic views and featuring dangerous points near gullies, suitable only for experienced skiers. There are also two other slopes: one blue for beginners and another red, descending through a lunar-like landscape amidst ancient and newly formed craters, some still emitting smoke.
“A Muntagna” also offers the opportunity for those less experienced with skiing and snowboarding to venture into excursions with snowshoes and sled descents.
